On International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2017, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), its Fiat Professional brand and Gruppo Dirigenti Fiat together renewed the collaboration which for several years has linked them with the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.
A ceremony held inside the concentration camp today featured the donation of a Fiat Ducato which will be used by the Museum's Maintenance Service to deal with maintenance activities and needs, and for multiple transport purposes.
The vehicle was consigned by Gruppo Dirigenti Fiat, in the name of FCA and Fiat Professional, and the keys were handed to the Museum's vice-director, Anna Skrzypińska.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an annual international event that commemorates Holocaust victims, first established on 1 November 2005 by the United Nations General Assembly. The choice of 27 January as the date for the commemoration was motivated by the fact that on 27 January 1945 Red Army troops liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
The Ducato donated today is an addition to the Jeep Renegade and the Fiat 500X AWD which were consigned in January 2015 to support the Museum's surveillance activities. That was the occasion - when various members of Gruppo Dirigenti Fiat were visiting the concentration camp - that the idea was born of establishing a collaboration between FCA, Gruppo Dirigenti Fiat and the Auschwitz- Birkenau Memorial and Museum, and when the visitors were shown various drawings by an unknown prisoner and later discovered inside the camp complex. These drawings were among the protagonists, the following May, in the partnership between the Treno della Memoria (Train of Memory) Association and the Gruppo Dirigenti Fiat, with the project "Pages of Memory: the caravan".
Supported by the Piedmont Region and carried out in collaboration with the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum publishing centre, that project consisted of the original idea of a Fiat Ducato (provided by Fiat Professional, fitted with a portable library and easily identifiable thanks to the large project-logo on its bodywork) containing hundreds of books and documents - including those drawings by the nameless inmate - which spent months visiting libraries, schools, associations and squares in Italy and around Europe. A project with a deep cultural and educational value which involved thousands of young (and not so young) people in Italy and Europe, highlighting and promoting the importance of books as indispensable instruments for transmitting the testimony of survivors of the Shoah.
The vehicle consigned today is a 130 HP Ducato Maxi Van 2.3 MJT II, fitted with protective panels on floor and walls. The Fiat Professional range (completely renewed over the last two years) is the right answer for any kind of transport mission: the brand offers models which cover every possible segment. On top of this, the brand proposes every kind of bodywork, load capacity and volume, and offers a complete choice of options in terms of wheelbase, length and height. And finally, Fiat Professional's models come with highly efficient engines driven by a choice of fuels: petrol, diesel, LPG and methane. What is more, the brand places assertive focus on "specialities", such as passenger transport and the world of converted vehicles.
